The 49^th Session of CIRED took place at Kista, 15km (10 miles) North of Stockholm, Sweden, from the 10^th to the 13^th of June. The main subject for this session was the contribution one can expect from smart grid products and methodologies towards a sustainable development.

About 750 communications were presented both orally in parallel sssions and in poster sessions. For more information, please refer to www.cired2013.org and cired.net.

In parellel with the conference, the Technical Exhibition gathered more than 80 exhibitors with products and services dedicated to distribution grids. Among them, there was Albatroz Engineering.

Albatroz Engineering presented its solutions for over-head line inspection with two novelties from its Research & Development activities:

• The first application of automatic video processing to be rolled-out,
• The early trials with "Unmanned Aerial Vehicles" [UAV].

... in addition to the emphasis on increased aeronautical skills and competences.

An example of a right-of-way shared by over-head lines at different voltage levels. Notice the wood towers, which are the most common in Sweden.

One of the papers published in the 2009 Session mentions the outcome of the experience of the Portuguese distribution grid with PLMI. See the first reference on the right.

A second reference, now from the current session, shows PLMI as a mature technology and new methdos for power line inspection based on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are introduced. Albatroz Engineering has followed this work and is also considering its solutions.

A third paper, also from this session, focus on new methods for automated processing of digital images or streaming, based on approaches similar to those used by Albatroz Engineering to detect different issues: insulator angle, insulator visibility and snow accumulation.
