Albatroz Engenharia will take part in ๐๐ฎ๐ง๐๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐๐จ๐ง 2025, an international event that brings together programmers, designers, entrepreneurs, and researchers from across Europe to develop technological solutions with real-world impact.
In this edition, we are presenting the challenge โ, which invites participants to reflect on the role of technology in protecting forests.
Invasive species of the ๐๐ค๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ขgenus, native to warmer climates, have been spreading throughout Mediterranean ecosystems, taking advantage of climate change and threatening local biodiversity. Moreover, these species benefit from summer wildfires โ as fast-growing plants, they outcompete native vegetation for sunlight when they regenerate after fires. This creates a self-reinforcing cycle: rising temperatures increase the spread of ๐ข๐ค๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ข๐ดand the frequency of wildfires, which in turn further promote the expansion of ๐ข๐ค๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ข๐ด.
By combining different remote sensing techniques โ such as satellite & multispectral imagery, LiDAR surveys and drone observations โ we aim to contribute to a better understanding of the diffusion of these invaders and their evolution over time.
Our goal is to support the monitoring of Portuguese forests and to promote a more informed and sustainable management of the territory, anticipating the areas most susceptible to ๐ข๐ค๐ข๐ค๐ช๐ข invasion after each summer.
This project, developed in collaboration with public and private entities โ including ๐-๐ซ๐๐๐๐ฌ, which monitors acacias along the power grid โ can serve as a model for similar initiatives in other Mediterranean countries facing comparable ecological challenges.
Albatroz Engenharia believes that technological innovation should serve society and the environment, contributing to concrete and sustainable solutions. We will be present at JunctionX Lisbon 2025 โ a space for sharing, creativity, and collaboration around sustainability, technology and knowledge.
