Abstract
A real time solution is proposed to inspect over-head power lines for track clearance anomalies using a helicopter. Anomaly definition is based on preset safety distances to different types of obstacles in the vicinity of the power line. These distances yield significant hazard reductions and improvement in quality of service. The solution uses relative distances between objects measured using LIDAR and GPS data to create a 3D model of the power line region. The paper focuses on data segmentation and anomaly identification algorithms and their performance on field results.
